At the Bottom of this page are "graduates" of the
Prison Mustang Gentling Program |
|
When you review the horses, don't let their sizes bother you...These are
young horses. When you get these boys home, get them on a consistent
diet of good food, keep working with them, groom them often, they will
FLOURISH. My horse was 14H about 800 lbs when I purchased him, and
now, 4 years later he is 15'2 and pushing 1000 lbs. | |
To get a "feel" for what these young horses turn into....look at the
tab labeled "Look at us" on the home page of our web site. |
|
Quotes from previous Mustang
Adopters......... |
|
People forget that these are YOUNG horses - they will continue to grow until
they are 5 or 6. We have some friends who adopted some prison horses two
years ago and they recently mentioned how surprised they are (pleasantly)
that the horses have grown to be quite large. The ones they adopted were low
priced because people overlooked them due to their size. But they are now
over 15 hands tall |
|
Of course. The prison mustangs are young. They're going to
have 2-3-4 years until they fully mature. (That is, if they get
fed decently and are given plenty of work. Even with domestics,
their musculature can change significantly from puny to being
very stout. On the flip side the opposite can occur. At HSA
where I have my horses, there is a quarter gelding who used to
be nice looking. This lady bought him green, got bucked off him
and now he's stood in his corral for over two years. The muscle
is gone, and he looks very immature now. Very sad.)
Even Red has changed from the five-year old when I got him
to the nine-year old now. People think he's a quarter horse,
until I flip his mane over to show his brand. He's not big or
that stout, just nicely put together. To me, he looks like a
calvary remount horse from way back. He went through the prison
program, too.
The most important thing that needs to be instilled in people
is the need to work these horses consistently, at least in the
beginning. For the first month after I got Red (he had been
turned back to the BLM), I got him out every day turning him
loose in a round pen, and then riding him once he got rid of his
excess energy. He was out for at least 1 1/2 hours/day in the
beginning because that's what it took.

| |
These pictures
were taken on January 6, 2010 - All the horses seem to be doing well.
Overall, many of the horses are quiet.....AND, the Mustangs/Trainers still
have another month to work together....This is going to be a Adoption if you
are in the market for a Mustang!!!!!!!
The guys get a big pat on the back for getting these horses
so cleaned up. Our weather has been simply AWFUL - very, very, very
cold. They can not bathe the horses, so they brushed, and brushed and
brushed the horses trying to get them ready for picture day. Between
the thick Mustang coats, the mud and the COLD, I think the guys did a GREAT
job!!!!!

From the Trainer (Tarp): Dealer has been gentle
to work with, and has never offered to buck. His is nice to ride, with
a soft lope. He stops on cue and will side pass with ease. You
can open gates without dismounting him. He is easy to catch and good
about his feet.
From Cindy: Only 4 and 15.1 Hands!! He
just may have a little more growing. He sure is pretty, and a soft
eye...He was calm with us around...just walked in, let us take his picture,
and walked out like a perfect gentleman
|
| |
"Sunfire" BLM #3097
3 years old 15.1 Hands 1100 lbs Sorrel
HMA: Fox-Lake Range, Reno, Washoe
Country NV
From the Trainer (Walker): Sunfire
is gentle and fun to ride. He is intelligent and learns very quickly.
He backs up and stops well. He also side passes and trailer loads
nicely. He is good about having his feet picked up and trimmed and is
easy to catch. He loves attention and will make a great horse for
anyone that loves to ride. You can open and close gates from his back.
From Cindy: As most of you
know, I just love a pretty mane and tail - guess it's a girl thing...When
this guy get's regular grooming, and some fancy hair products applied to
that mane and tail, he is just going to SHINE!
|
| |

"CRISPY"
BLM #3189 3 Years old 14.3 Hands
900 Lbs
HMA: Nevada Wild Horse Range, Las
Vegas, Clark County
From the Trainer (Medina): Crispy is a very
good looking "light gray". He is still young, and should grow quite a
bit in the next 3 years! This horse has a smooth
lope, trots on cue, stops great, side passes well, and backs up very fast.
He trailer loads well and is a great all around horse with lots of energy
From Cindy: Oh, my gosh - is he
too cute! Cute! Cute! Cute!
|
| |

Pete BLM #3239 3
Years Old 15.1 Hands 1075 lbs
HMA: Nevada Wild
Horse Range, Las Vegas, Clark County
From the trainer (Farmer): I have
been riding Pete for about two and a half months and he is VERY gentle.
He stops, backs up, side passes, trailer loads and is good with all four
feet. Pete is also nice to catch, easy to saddle and loves attention.
I would recommend Pete to anyone.
From Cindy: When we were standing
around after the picture taking was done....several of the guys said that
Pete has one of the coolest personalities out there....The trainer said Pete
loves attention so much, when he comes out in the morning to get him, he is
right there at the gate. The trainer is a NOVICE rider, and Pete has
been doing a good job of taking care of his rider.....
|
| |

"Strawberry" BLM #3281
3 years old 14.2 Hands 950 lbs
HMA: Nevada wild Horse Range, Las
Vegas, Clark County NV
From the Trainer (Lechuga):
Strawberry is a 4 year old Red Roan gelding.
This horse is very athletic; he trots, canters, backs up and even side
passes well. He trailer loads nicely and just recently had his hoofs
trimmed. Strawberry would be a good ranch horse and is lots of fun to
rope with.
From Cindy: When I asked the guys,
which horses would make good speed event horses, Strawberry was one they
named. The rider showed off for me...and by golly, he has a quick
start! He could put him in a lope from a standstill. The trainer
called him his "Two Door Sports car!" He is just starting to get a
sliding stop on him, which he did show me. When the horse lays down in
the stall, he lets the trainer come into the pen and lay down with him.
|
| |

"Handsome (Guapo)" BLM #3319 5 years
old 15 Hands 1000 Lbs
HMA: Nevada wild Horse range, Las Vegas,
Clark County
From the Trainer (Medina):
Handsome (Guapo) is a 5 year old Chestnut. From the day this horse
arrived, he has been a great horse, within the first two hours of his
training, he was in a halter and being groomed. AND, on his second
day, was being ridden with ease. He will hold up his own feet and
stand still to have them worked on. His lope is very smooth and he stops on
a dime. He side passes left and right smoothly, and responds great to
leg cues. He is also on his way to being a good neck reiner.
Handsome is ready to be a great companion for anyone, as a trail horse or a
working horse on a ranch. He is roping ready and has been exposed to
cattle.
From Cindy: What more can I
say. A month ago when I asked Hank for his "gentle" horses, this is
one he pointed out......This is a gentle, willing horse........No
doubt....he has figured out that we humans are okay, and he needs a BEST
FRIEND who is going to be kind and gentle with him, and he will do anything
for you! Many of the guys pointed to Handsome when I asked about
"gentle".
This was one of the three horses
that the guys thought would be good for speed events too.
|
| |

"Snowman" BLM #3366 4
years Old 14.2 Hands 1000 lbs
HMA: Nevada Wild
Horse Range, Las Vegas, Clark County
From the Trainer (Smittle):
Snowman is a 4 year old grey/black gelding and stands 14.2 Hands. He is a
very nice handling horse with an excellent stop, turn around and departs on the
correct lead. This is a very smart horse and would do well with a job to
do.
From Cindy : My first question
to the trainer was "Snowman, why"...He pointed the white out in his face and
down his neck....he is snow specked! When I was talking with the trainer, he
said of the four horses he has worked with in this group of horses, this is his
favorite. He is pleasant to ride, and handles beautifully. He is
already getting a sliding stop on him. He did say that Snowman is a little
shy, but once he figures things out, he does well. (If he is shy, he may not
show well at the adoption....If you are interested in this horse, and he is
acting shy at the adoption, ask the trainer to pull him off to the side and ride
him for you...get to know him one on one. He did fine with me after he
stood there with me for a few minutes)
|
| |

"Blackjack" BLM #3435 4 years old
15.1 Hands 1150 Lbs
HMA: North Stillwater,
Winnemucca, Humbolt County, NV
From the Trainer (Railey): Blackjack
is a four year old black gelding. He is VERY smart. He moves
nicely and looks great! He also trailer loads well. He went
through a desensitizing process with flags, tarps, etc. and he did very
well. He does NOT scare easily! All and all, he is a good
horse and has been a PLEASURE to train.
From Cindy: The trainer said this
horse has bucked only once - the day he put the saddle on him....He said
when he put the saddle on him, he swore the horse jumped 6 feet straight up
in the air. This of course made him just a bit nervous, but he said
the horse NEVER bucked once he got on him. WHEW!!! He
feels that this is a stand out horse in the group. He can pull
anything (need to pull some tree stumps out...here is your horse).
He jumps off the horse, does handstands on the horse....Any trick riders out
there...this might be your horse! This was one of the
three horses that the guys felt would be good in speed events.

|
| |

"Alamo" BLM #3491 5
Years old 14.2 Hands 950 Lbs
HMA: North Stillwater, Winnemucca,
Humbolt County, NV
From the trainer (Medina): Alamo
is a dark Bay. He may seem kind of small, but he is STRONG. On
the first ride, he never even attempted a buck. His lope is very
smooth and has different speeds if you ask for them. He is not a lazy
horse - he is always ready to be put to work, whatever it is. He has a great
stop, backs up and side passes right and left. He doesn't mind having
his feet handled and he trailer loads. This horse would be great for
ranch work or just a peaceful trail ride.
From Cindy: At 5 years
of age, this little guy has another 1-2 years of growth. He is not
going to be a giant, but has a giant heart, very willing to do what you ask.
I'd rather have a little horse with a lot of give, then a big lazy horse!
Plus, he's SOOO cute!
|
| |

"Pistol" BLM #5334 5 Years old
14.3 Hands 1050 lbs
HMA: North Stillwater, Winnemucca,
Humbolt County, NV
From the Trainer (Lehman): Pistol
is a 5 year old grey mustang. He is good to saddle and has a calm
demeanor. he NEVER tried bucking. He walks, trots, canters, and
has a nice stop with a good back up. He trailer loads and is
eager and willing to learn. He has had his feet trimmed and is calm when
you're under him.
From Cindy: While talking to this
trainer, I found out he owns Quarter horses. Prior to this program, he
"hated Mustangs"......guess what this program showed a quarter horse owner?
Those Mustangs can make pretty good horses! He said he has slid off
the back of his Mustang....if he tried that with his quarter horse, he'd be
kicked halfway across the arena. Stories like this make my heart do a
flip flop...Can you see the big smile on my face? The trainer
said this horse has been gentle from the first day under saddle. The
first day he was under saddle, the trainer could get on, from both sides. When
I first saw Pistol, I wanted a bottle of show sheen and a brush. LOOK
at that mane......Oh, my gosh. This is going to be a BEAUTIFUL show
stopping horse.....I like to see pictures of ALL the horses after they get
adopted, but I really, REALLY want to see what this horse looks like after
some good feed, supplements and grooming. He is going to be gorgeous.
Did I ever tell you I like long manes and bushy tails?? LOL
|
| |

"Sammy" BLM #5379 4 years old
14.2 Hands 1000 Lbs
HMA: Callaghan, Austin, Lander County,
NV
From the trainer (Smittle): Sammy is a 4
year old sorrel paint. Sammy will make a good trail horse and is
looking for a friend. He is easy to catch, bridle and saddle, a real
partner.
From Cindy: Some horses are "okay" with
humans....and some horses want to bond with you. This is one that
wants to bond...he'll do the job you want, but he wants to be your best
friend too.
|
| |

"Mesa" BLM #5783 4
Years Old 15.1 Hands 1200 Lbs
HMA: Rocky Hills, Elko, Elko County, NV
From the trainer (Rossback):
Mesa is a black and brown gelding who is easy to catch. He's gentle
and gets along with other horses. he also trailer loads well.
Mesa has been trimmed and is a really stout horse.
From Cindy: Do you know how many
times I hear, "Mustangs are all scrawny and ugly!"....Look at this 4 year
old...15.1 Hands - 1200 pounds. He's gorgeous and, at least in
my book, HUGE. I can't imagine there is anything on a ranch that he
can't do. Got a big job - we got a big horse! Come check him
out!
|
| |

"Little Richard" BLM #7235 4 years Old
16 hands 1100 Lbs
HMA: Twin Peaks, Gerlach, Washoe
County, NV
From the Trainer (Lechuga): Little
Richard is a 4 year old Black Gelding. He can trot, canter, stop, back
up and side pass. He has a very smooth canter and is very gentle.
He trailer loads without a worry. Recently, he had his hoofs trimmed
and he did well. You can rope off him without a problem. He
would be excellent for trail rides.
From Cindy: Oh, my
gosh....this horse is soooooo tall. Okay, I'm only 5'4", but still 16
Hands at 4 years old - that's tall! All I can think when I look at him
is that he looks like a lanky teenager - all legs. Not that he is not
proportionate....I think he's put together nicely. What a trail horse
- is there anything he can't go over or plow through?
|
| |

"Fabio" BLM #7999 5 Years Old
15.3 Hands 1000 Lbs
HMA: Rock Creek, Battle Mountain,
Elko County, NV
From the trainer (Smittle): Fabio
is a 5 year old Sorrel gelding. He is VERY gentle and calm with a soft
eye. He is very energetic and would do well with a job because he is
eager to learn, easy to catch and trailer loads.
From Cindy: Here is yet another horse that can
do whatever you need done.
The trained told me he was very
energetic and very athletic.
He is a nice size, gentle and willing - is
there anything else you can ask from a horse. PLUS, he is good
looking. Of course, with a name like "Fabio" you know he has to be a
total hunk!
|
| |

"Pancho" BLM #8313 6 years
old 14.2 Hands 1050 lbs
HMA: Fox Hog, Ceaderville, Washoe
County, NV
From the Trainer (Medina): Pancho
is a very strong bay that is 14.2 hands. At first sight, you might
think he is lazy....BUT, in fact, he is just waiting for the rider to ask him
to do something. His lope is very smooth, he backs up very nicely, has
an excellent side pass, but the VERY best thing about this horse is his
STOP. Pancho is an all around great horse.
From Cindy: I'm sure you've
heard, it's "Just a bay" - Well, this is one very pretty bay. He has
just enough chrome that says, "look at me!" I think he is a nice
example of how pretty our Mustangs can be, even if they are "Just a
Bay"!!!!!!
|
| |

"Tubby/Eeore" BLM #8483 6
years old 14 Hands 900 lbs
HMA: Devils Garden, Alturas, Modoc County
From the Trainer (Cole): Tubby
is 14 hands tall, brown with a white star on his head. He is GENTLE and a
rider friendly horse. He can trot, lope, side pass left and right, has a
great stop, and backs up. Tubby trailer loads well and has been trimmed.
From Cindy: This is a special horse
that NEEDS a special home. When Hank (the head trainer) was out in the big
corrals with ALL the wild horses, this horse walked up to Hank and followed him
around. Hank "pushed" him off, and the horse cam back. Hank said,
"OKAY! If you want in the program so bad, you are IN" So, this horse
wanted IN the program. He has been a calm guy since day one. The
rider called him "Mr. Mellow" and the sweetest horse in the program!
Someone else started Tubby, but this trainer has had him for the last 6 weeks -
and it is the very first horse he has ever been on! I guess he is a bit of
a character....when he eats, he puts his front feet in the tub with the
feed.....Guess now
|
| |
I goofed - Somehow, I didn't get a picture of Raven.....I've asked
the BLM person that was there taking pictures to get me his pictures when he has
a minute. THANKS to Mark Struble, I have pictures of Raven now - THANK YOU
MARK!

"Raven" BLM #3210 3
Years Old 14.3 Hands 900 lbs
HMA: Nevada Wild Horse Range, Las Vegas,
Clark County, NV
From the Trainer (Sherman): Raven is a
black, he stands 14.3 Hands tall and weighs about 900 lbs. From the
beginning, he has been gentle. He is a good traveler in all his gates.
He has a nice stop and back up. He side passes, trailer loads and neck
reins well. I would recommend him to anyone wanting a good riding horse.
He also has no problem with trimming.
From Cindy: The trainer said
this horse will be carrying the flag during the opening ceremonies - so be
watching for him. He said Raven is already neck reining well, and he's
amazed how smoothly he transitions gates. The VERY FIRST day he rode him,
he rode him all around the facility. He said Raven is for the most part
real calm....If something does scare him, he get's over it pretty quickly.
|
| |

"SHADOW" 4 years
old 14.3 Hands 1100 Lbs
HMA: Rock Creek, Elko, Elko
County NV
From the Trainer (Peterson):
Shadow is a well mannered horse that
backs up, side passes, stops and trailer loads in a stock trailer
and a two horse trailer. He is not a horse for a beginner - he
needs an experienced rider that can help him and build his
confidence.
From Cindy: Sit back -
I've got a lot to say about this horse. When the guys told me this
was Shadow, I didn't know what they meant at first. Then it
dawned on me. Shadow was in our October adoption and didn't
sell. You see, he had just stopped bucking two week prior to
our last adoption, and Hank let everyone know that. He didn't
want anyone getting hurt - the horse was going to need a trainer or
advanced rider. Well, I could not believe that this sweet
horse, standing before me was Shadow.
Just because we have a time frame of 120 days, it just wasn't enough
for Shadow. Shadow needed the extra time. He had stopped
bucking back in October, and has never bucked again!!!!
While I was standing by him, he
was calm and let me love on him. As a matter of fact, he took
my note pad and nosed it for a minute and then took it out of my
hand and waved it around. It was pretty funny!
The trainer said Shadow could
shake hands.....Okay, "show me"....

AND, he said that a previous
rider had taught him to dance. Okay - you know I made him show
me. He was at a stop, and he started dancing with his front
feet....all we needed was some music.

This is a perfect picture to illustrate our saying
about this program....It Gentles Mustangs and Men! Shadow and
his trainer....think they are a bit bonded?

Thanks to this program,
Shadow has had a second chance to succeed... He deserves a special,
LOVING home....come check him out!

Because of requests that had come in, we asked
Hank to show us the horses that he thought were the calmest (so far) in the
group of horses. The horses still have another 6 weeks, so there may be
some more "calm" horses in the group.......This is just a sneak peak at "some"
of the calmer horses.....Keep in mind, after all the storms, it is really muddy
at the prison, so the "boys" don't look their best right now...
|
|
|

We thought this was a handsome guy.
Nice "stout" body.....His name is Mesa
|
|

This horse didn't mesh well with his first trainer.
But the current trainer says he is a real sweetheart....He does have a lot of
go. |

This one has a story....When Hank was walking around in
the BIG HOLDING area selecting the horses for the February adoption, this
horse "Picked" Hank. He walked out from the other horses and followed
Hank while he was picking horses. Hank pushed him away, and then he
came right back. Hank said, "Okay, if you want in that bad, I'll take
you." When I take pictures, we try to get their ears forward....Hank
laughed and said that wasn't going to be easy, because the horse just
doesn't spook. I don't remember the horses name, but his nick name
should be "PET DOG"!! Hank said the horse is very kind....he has a
novice rider working with him.
|
Hank said
these colts are coming along nicely.....they have been pretty calm from the
beginning....

When we saw this one, I thought he looked like tall,
lanky teenager - He's going to be a big guy!

SNEAK PEAK at February 13, 2010 Prison Horses
From Cindy:
Bart and
I had to be at the prison on 10/15. The new Mustangs were put into their
respective pens on Monday (10/12) and left to settle for Monday and
Tuesday. On Wednesday (10/14), the guys started the gentling process. Here
are the pictures I took on 10/15; |

2/04/09 "Reno" and Ed - Reno adopted at Wild
Horse and Burro Expo 08/21/09
|
|
My name is Mary and I met you at the Carson City Mustang adoption on October
10, 2009. I wanted to give you an update on how Gypsy is doing. I have
added Boy to the end of his name since everyone was calling him a she. He's
very curious about everything. The day we left Carson City we did a gymkhana
and he did really well for just coming off a long drive home. He had to
stop at each barrel and check it out before going around as well as check
out everyone in the crowd.
To date he has gone on several trail rides, Christmas carolling on the
steets of Stockton (he even allowed me to put bows on him), and two camping
trips to the beach. His first trip to the beach was great. He stared at
the ocean with big wide eyes and his ears straight up, just looking. He
even went to the breakline but didn't want the water touching him. Our
second trip was over New Year's we did a 9 mile trail ride to the beach and
he actually went into the ocean, with some encouragement. He has been a
great horse and we have built a great trust between the two of us. We are
still working on who the alpha is and I am slowing winning that battle, but
he is a momma's boy!
We have many more adventures planned. We will be doing 125 miles across the
Mohave Desert in April and moving on to another series of gymkhanas in the
spring along with trail rides and more camping trips. I have attached a
picture of the two of us from our last trip to the beach (I hope the file
isn't to big to open).
Regards, Mary Lathrop, CA

Staci and Royal at there 1st show. Royal is a prison trained mustang.
adopted August 2008 at the wild horse and burro show. There is not anything
this horse will not try for her.
Please let Bo, the inmate who trained Royal, see how Staci has done
with him. They want him to know how much they love Royal, and want to
thank him for what an awesome job he did in his starting for Royal.
|
Here is an updated photo of
our prison trained mustang Spyda (a.k.a. Spiderman). We had him out for a
gallop on the beach south of San Diego last week.

|
This is me
and Casper, he was adopted at the prison 4 years ago. This was 2 years
ago at our first trail trial. Casper was perfect. This picture was
us crossing our first bridge. He acted like he had always done it. I
figured out after the first two obstacles, Casper would watch the other
horses. So every obstacle after that, I waited and let him watch before
we took our turn and he would be perfect. No, we didn't win, but it was
about seeing how he would handle obstacles, lots of people and horses.
He was incredible. I think he had more fun than me. He was my perfect
partner all day.
